    On 13 December CAS President LU Yongxiang, who is also co-chair of the InterAcademy Council on International Issues (IAC), held talks with visiting Executive Director Dr. John Campbell in Beijing.

    Dr. Campbell reported to Prof. Lu on IAC work, including the agenda of the forthcoming meeting of IAC Executive Committee, circulation of the IAC energy report entitled Lighting the Way: Toward a Sustainable Energy Future, plans for the future IAC research programs on water resources, infectious disease prevention, and collegiate education in Africa, and IAC cooperation with the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP), and the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP).

    Prof. Lu expressed satisfaction with the work implemented by the IAC Secretariat under the leadership of Dr. Campbell. The IAC report on energy has aroused echoes through the world, not only in the S&T community but also among many international organizations. It also received closed attention from authorities in the countries concerned. A press conference on the report was held in the past October in Beijing, obtaining wide-range support from governmental departments and news media. Chinese Premier WEN Jiabao met with Dr. Steven Chu, Director of the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and co-chair of the IAC Energy Study Panel.

    Prof. Lu gave the forthcoming research programs the nod, emphasizing that IAC should conduct research into hot topics in the world by sticking to its objectives and mission, and strive to offer high-quality research reports to international organizations, especially the United Nations.

    Also present at the meeting were Director of the CAS Institute of Microbiology GAO Fu, Director of the CAS Water Resources Research Center XIA Jun, Mr. YU Guoyang from the Department of International Cooperation under the Ministry of Education, and Director-general of the CAS Bureau of International Cooperation LV Yonglong.
